I left my homestead exempt property for an overseas assignment for one year then returned. During that year I rented the property while I was overseas. During my overseas assignment I was told that I lost my homestaed exemption and would have to re-apply when I returned. As a result I am being charged higher taxes for the year that I was overseas. I tried to explain that I was overseas on a U.S. Govermment assignment, but was told that only military personnel could maintain their homestead exemption while overseas. Is there any solution to this?

No. the property Appraiser is correct. Only military personnel can do this, and we have been fighting this to no avail in Tallahassee.
