I am about to purchase a home outright with cash.

My current house is upside down and don't want to throw money away into it.

If some disaster happens and I lose my job or something and cannot pay the old house mortgage and equity line, is my new homesteaded house protected no matter what if I continue to pay for all bills related to it?

Basically, stop paying for anything related to the old house (mortgage / equity line)

Yes, as long as the new property is not used as an instrument of fraud, and you are current on your property taxes or mortgage (if applicable), your new home and its equity will be protected.
