I got my tax statement and the county of Polk in the state of florida took away $2,554.00 of the homestead exemption, I called the tax office and was told that it is because I am the only one that applied for the exemption. They told me that everyone that lives here had to come into the office and apply because their name was on the deed, my wife and my son. I got $25,000 in the tax year 2004. Can they do this to me, I am 70 years old and was told that I had to be blind or confined to a wheel chair to get a disibility exemption, I am totaly and permanently disabled ,can they change the rules so I don't qualify for the disability exemption? Tom,

The rules don't change. They should grant you along with the other residents the entire exemption amount. Anyone with legal or equitable title is entitled to the full exemption. Demand that they show you the law and court case precedent to support their decision.
