Hello,

I have homestead exemption on my property. I moved out due to separation/divorce. My ex wife and children still live in the property. I received a letter from the property appraiser asking for proof of residency because the homestead exemption receipt was returned by postal service to their office. Is there anything I can do the maintain the homestead exemption on my property.

Thank you!
LP

Lucas,

You are still entitled to the exemption regardless of your situation. Extended absence for any reason is not a reason to deny. Legal abandonment of the homestead hinges on two issues...rental of the entire property or claiming a new primary residence/homestead exemption.

johnbsims3,

thank you for your reply.

The property appraiser office is asking me to fill out a form confirming that I have resided on the property through January 2012 and to attach 2 proofs of address such as driver's license and vehicle registration. Since I moved out I changed the address on my driver's license and vehicle registration. What do you suggest me to do?

Thank you!
LP
