We have homes in Florida and Illinois, with our primary home in Florida. Can we rent our Florida home while away for 3 months and still maintain our homestead protection?

Rental is considered abandonment of a homestead. I would advise against it. There are specifics to the law, which you can read about on this BBS. Just do a searh on Rental. The 'Search' link at the top will take you to the page for searching keywords.
