transference of homestead exemption in bankruptcy

I moved to Florida from NY in August 2005. I sold my house in NY in 2006 and the money is tied up in court proceedings and in an escrow account in NY. Now I am disabled and will have to file for bankruptcy protection. I researched the homestead exemption issue and learned that the money from the sale of my house is shielded under homestead laws and I can use all of it to buy a house in Florida that will be protected. Has anyone had experience with this issue or know a bankruptcy atty who has? I am scared and don't want to make a mistake.
