Question: We are buying a home in Florida, currently reside in the North East (NE) and will close by years end.
Is is our intent for this to be our Homestead. We will rent our NE properties for now and spend some time in them over the summer.
My spouse will be spending a lot of time in Florida but initially will still be here in the NE at least part of the time. I will be here in the NE some of the time, working mostly to get my business switched to Florida. That could be a lengthy project.
Do we qualify for a Homestead exemption based on the above facts?
Answer: Yes. The homestead can be granted if the property is occupied as of January 1st. Also, the intent coupled with actual use is sufficient to claim homestead as long as the Florida property is a primary and permanent residence.
